Mumbai’s pollution can be halved in five years, but target must be MMR, not just the city

Rapid urbanisation, industrialisation and rising vehicle numbers across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have driven a sharp deterioration in air quality, with pollution sources extending well beyond the BMC’s jurisdiction. A coordinated regional clean air plan, stricter industrial enforcement, cleaner transport and better dust and waste management could more than halve pollution levels in five years. A comprehensive regional clean air plan is essential to address these issues effectively across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
