TOPSHOT – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (R), Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen (L) and Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen visit Qoornoq, an abandoned settlement on the island of Qaarusuup Nunaa, also called ‘Bear Island’, Greenland on September 6, 2026. The settlement’s houses today primarily function as summer houses. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Greenland on September 6 for a two-day visit aimed at reaffirming the bloc’s support for the Arctic island coveted by US President Donald Trump. Throughout her two-day visit, von der Leyen will be sending the message that the Danish autonomous territory belongs with Europe rather than the US.
